Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Importing a used Jeep Wrangler Unlimited from the USA

The Wrangler Unlimited is the four-door, long-wheelbase version of Jeep's icon, and it is one of the most sought-after American imports in Germany for a simple reason: the US market has an enormous, diverse supply that Europe never received in the same volume or configuration. Every Wrangler Unlimited is assembled in Toledo, Ohio, which matters for your paperwork — a US-built vehicle with a documented VIN and plant code will usually qualify for 0% EU import duty under the current origin rules, while the German import VAT of 19% always applies on top. If you want a proper solid-axle 4x4 with a removable roof and doors, buying used from the States opens up trims, engines and colours that are rare or were never sold here.

Production years and key changes

The "Unlimited" name first appeared on the stretched TJ (2004–2006), but the four-door body most buyers want began with the JK generation. The JK ran from 2007 to 2018 and introduced the practical four-door layout that turned the Wrangler from a weekend toy into a usable family 4x4. Jeep overlapped generations in 2018, selling the outgoing JK alongside the new JL. The JL (2018–present) brought a stiffer body, improved on-road manners, better interior materials and, from 2021, the 4xe plug-in hybrid. When you import a used Wrangler Unlimited from the USA you are almost always looking at a JK or JL — know which one you are buying, because parts, electronics and TÜV expectations differ.

What is under the hood

The dominant US engine across both generations is the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6. Early JKs (2007–2011) used the older 3.8-litre V6, which is noticeably weaker and thirstier — many buyers deliberately seek the 2012-and-later Pentastar for its roughly 285 hp and smoother power delivery. The JL added a 2.0-litre turbocharged four with mild-hybrid eTorque and, in the US, a 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 for a few model years. Transmissions are a five-speed automatic on early JKs, a five-speed manual, and later a six-speed manual or ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic on the JL. Drivetrain is genuine part-time four-wheel drive with a low-range transfer case; Rubicon trims add locking front and rear differentiers and an electronic sway-bar disconnect. This is a body-on-frame 4x4 with live axles front and rear — rugged, but not a crossover.

Trims and body styles

US Wrangler Unlimited trims run from the basic Sport and Sport S through the popular Sahara (more road-focused, painted fenders on JL) to the trail-ready Rubicon with its 4:1 transfer case and lockers. Special editions such as Willys, Moab, Rubicon Recon and the 392 Hemi V8 (JL) show up regularly on the US used market. Body style is fixed — a four-door SUV with a folding windscreen, removable doors and a choice of soft top, three-piece hard top (Freedom Top) or the JL's power Sky One-Touch roof.

What the US market offers

Supply is deep. Late JK Unlimiteds (2015–2018) and early-to-mid JLs (2018–2022) are plentiful, typically with 40,000 to 120,000 miles depending on year. Because Wranglers hold value and enjoy a strong enthusiast following, well-kept examples with service history are easy to find, and the dry climates of the American Southwest yield rust-free frames that are worth paying attention to. Watch for lifted, over-modified trail trucks — for a clean German registration, a closer-to-stock vehicle is usually the smarter import.

Who this import is for

A used Wrangler Unlimited from the USA suits the buyer who wants the real thing: removable roof, genuine low-range 4x4 capability and that unmistakable silhouette, in a spec that German dealers rarely stocked. It is ideal if you want a specific engine (the 3.6 Pentastar), a Rubicon with factory lockers, or a colour and trim combination that simply was not offered in Europe. It is less suitable if your priority is fuel economy or quiet motorway cruising — the Wrangler asks for compromises in exchange for its character.

Reliability: trouble spots to check

The Wrangler is mechanically simple but has a few well-documented weak points. The most talked-about is the "death wobble" — a violent steering shimmy over bumps, usually caused by worn track-bar bushings, ball joints or steering damper, and made worse by cheap lift kits. It is fixable, but check for it on any test drive. Early JK 3.8 engines can suffer oil consumption; the 3.6 Pentastar is stronger but early Pentastars had cylinder-head issues (left bank) that were largely resolved by 2013. Water leaks around the doors and windscreen frame are common on all Wranglers, so inspect carpets and footwells for damp. On the JL, watch for the mild-hybrid eTorque electronics and occasional infotainment glitches. Frame and suspension rust is the big one for Europe — a Southwest US car is a genuine advantage here.

US vs. Europe differences

US Wranglers come with amber front side markers, red rear turn signals (combined with the brake lamp on many years) and no rear fog lamp — all points the TÜV examiner will check. Speedometers read in mph, and US models may lack the daytime-running-light and headlight-aiming configuration required here. Equipment such as Uconnect infotainment is fully functional but navigation maps are US-based. Emissions and on-board diagnostics conform to US standards, which is normally accepted for individual approval but should be verified for your specific year.

How the import works

Selection comes first: pick the generation, engine and trim you want and shortlist clean, lightly modified cars. Next, a VIN and origin check confirms the Toledo build and pulls the history. Payment runs through secure escrow so funds are only released once the car is verified. The vehicle is then booked onto ocean freight (RoRo or container) to a European port such as Bremerhaven. On arrival, customs clearance establishes the duty rate and levies the 19% import VAT. The Wrangler then goes through TÜV and individual approval (Einzelabnahme), followed by German registration.

Import duty, VAT and fees

In short: the 0% duty rate applies only with documented US origin (VIN/plant) – German import VAT of 19% is always due.

Because the Wrangler Unlimited is built in Toledo, Ohio, a used example with a documented US VIN and plant code will generally qualify for the 0% EU import duty available for goods of proven US origin under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, provided the transport is direct. This is not automatic or guaranteed — it depends on the origin evidence for your specific car. Separately, and in every case, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) applies on the customs value. As an independent broker we pass through these official charges without adding any margin to the vehicle price.

From modifications to registration

Typical work before registration includes converting the rear lighting to add a rear fog lamp and, where needed, separate rear indicators, adjusting or replacing headlights for right-hand traffic, and confirming the odometer reads correctly (a km cluster or documented conversion helps). Any US lift kit, oversized tyres or aftermarket bumpers must be assessed and entered into the papers or removed. A cleanly documented, near-stock Wrangler passes far more smoothly than a heavily modified trail build.

Pre-buy inspection points

Verify the VIN against the title and the Toledo plant code. Pull a full Carfax or AutoCheck history for accidents, title branding and odometer records. Inspect the frame, control arms and floor for rust, especially on non-Southwest cars. Test drive specifically for death wobble and check the steering components. Confirm a genuine service record for oil changes and any head or cooling work. Check the roof and door seals for leaks. Confirm the title is clean (not salvage or rebuilt) unless you are knowingly buying a rebuilt project.

What buyers ask most

Which Wrangler Unlimited engine should I import?

For most buyers the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 (2012 and later) is the sweet spot — stronger and smoother than the old 3.8, with good parts availability in Europe.

Is the death wobble a deal-breaker?

No. It is a suspension symptom, not an engine fault, and is usually cured by replacing worn steering and track-bar components. Just make sure you inspect for it before buying.

Will a used US Wrangler Unlimited qualify for 0% duty?

It is built in Ohio, so with a documented US VIN and origin evidence it usually qualifies. The 19% import VAT still applies in every case.

JK or JL — which is the better import?

The JL drives noticeably better and has newer safety and electronics; the JK is more affordable and mechanically simpler. Both are strong choices depending on budget.

Can I register a lifted US Wrangler in Germany?

Often yes, but every modification must be assessed and entered for TÜV. A near-stock car is quicker and cheaper to approve.

How long does the whole import take?

Typically a few weeks from purchase to arrival, plus the time for customs, TÜV and registration once it lands.

Do US Wranglers rust badly?

The frame and suspension can, which is exactly why dry-climate Southwest cars are prized. Always inspect the underbody.

Is the roof legal to remove in Germany?

Yes, the Wrangler is type-designed for open driving; the doors and roof can be removed within the vehicle's approval.
